At the opening of the UN General Assembly last month, global leaders gathered to address the world’s toughest challenges. In a time of deep divisions and inequalities, countries came together alongside partners from the public and private sectors to find common ground and work toward solutions, illustrating the important role the UN plays in the world.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK
Peace and security security and human rights issues were prominent at this year’s UNGA, from dealing with North Korea’s nuclear threats to ISIL’s abuses in Iraq, terrorism and human trafficking. Read about the threats that the UN Secretary-General addressed in his remarks >>

The UN and leaders also raised awareness about significant emergenciesaround the world that cannot be ignored. From the dire situation in Yemen, to four looming famines, the growing crisis in Myanmar and the deadly impact of extreme weather events and climate change, action is needed to reduce suffering. Support the UN’s lifesaving work >>

The good news is that partners are mobilizing to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address climate change. Throughout the week, the UN, NGOs, governments, businesses, and advocates announced concrete plans to advance a more sustainable world, from a new initiative to end gender-based violence to a landmark deal to make HIV treatment more widely available. Learn more >>
