Standing in solidarity: The horrendous, heartbreaking display of hatred and bigotry in Charlottesville this weekend was an affront to our country and to the values most of us hold dear. Our diversity is one of our country’s greatest strengths, and we will stand up to bigots and extremists, whether they target people of color, the Jewish community, LGBTQ individuals, Muslims, immigrants or any other group.

RESISTANCE RECESS Persisting for Women and Families
Members of Congress are on recess through Labor Day. While it’s important to rest up and recharge — because we’re in this fight for the long haul — it’s also a good time to attend a town hall meeting or rally in your state or community. From protecting our care to providing paid leave to winning fair pay, our issues matter, so let’s continue speaking out to protect women’s health, well-being and economic security.

WORK AND FAMILY Sandberg Helps Move the Country Forward on Paid Leave
In the current political and legislative environment, reasons to celebrate can feel few and far between. So we were especially pleased this month to be able to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act taking effect — a giant step toward greater gender equality and more family friendly workplaces — as well as the recent progress made possible by the dedicated and diverse national paid leave coalition the National Partnership convenes:
● In a watershed moment, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg endorsed the Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act last week. More »
● More than 340 organizations from across the country sent a letter to Congress urging members to support a strong, inclusive and responsible paid family and medical leave plan.More »
● Washington state passed an unprecedented paid family and medical leave program. More »
● And leading businesses and the private sector are increasingly expanding or enacting paid leave policies of their own. More »

HEALTH CARE The Fight Is Not Over
Last month, we won a major and meaningful victory in our fight to protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — a victory that will help protect the health and economic security of millions of women and families. And we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you, thank you, thank YOU!
However, the fight is not over and our work continues. The Trump administration and anti-women extremists in Congress are still scheming ways to sabotage the ACA and attack women’s health.
Stay tuned for actions you can take in coming weeks to continue resisting and persisting.
REPRO RIGHTS AND HEALTH Yes, Let's Mess With Texas
The truth is simple: Politicians who want to restrict LGBTQ rights and abortion access tell lies to push their agenda. Then they turn those lies into laws that actively hurt people in our communities. And that’s exactly what lawmakers in Texas are attempting by pushing both a "bathroom bill" that will largely hurt transgender kids, as well as cruel measures restricting abortion access for the most vulnerable. That’s why the National Partnership continues to partner with state advocates to fight back.

MATERNITY CARE Benefits of Labor Support
The National Partnership’s Carol Sakala co-authored an update to Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth, a systematic review that highlights the benefits of continuous labor support and offers information about how labor support differs when provided by people in different roles. The review found that it appears to offer impressive benefits and no harms to women and newborns, especially when provided by someone in a doula role. This is an important way to improve the quality, outcomes and experience of maternity care.
